About Bathukamma

Bathukamma is the state festival of Telangana, celebrated over nine days leading up to Dussehra. Women and girls gather wild and garden flowers, such as marigold, celosia, tangedu and gunuka, and stack them in concentric circles into a conical mound, the bathukamma, which stands for the goddess Gauri. In the evening they carry them to a clearing, set them in the middle, and sing in a circle, clapping and moving round and round. On the last day, called Saddula Bathukamma, the stacks are carried to a pond or lake and floated on the water, and the group sing a farewell. Each day has a special snack, often from sesame, jaggery and maize.
