About Festival Kreol

Festival Kreol is the annual celebration of Creole culture in the Seychelles, held over a week at the end of October, on the main islands of Mahé and Praslin. It was begun in 1985 and has since attracted visitors from other Creole-speaking communities, including those of Mauritius, Reunion and the Caribbean. The festival honours the Seychellois Creole language, Kreol, with poetry, storytelling and plays, as well as music in the form of moutya and sega, dance, and exhibitions of traditional dress, such as the madras and the kaftan. Food stalls serve fish curries, breadfruit, octopus curry and coconut-based sweets, and craft markets sell basketry and shell work. Competitions are held in cooking and in games. The week ends with a large concert.
