When is Fiji Day in 2026?

About Fiji Day

Fiji Day, on 10 October, marks Fiji's independence from Britain in 1970 and, since 2020, has been the national day. The official ceremonies have a flag-raising and a military display in Suva, and singing of the national anthem, Meda Dau Doka. Fijians of all backgrounds, indigenous iTaukei, Indo-Fijian and others, take part in the festivities, wearing sulu, the wrap skirt, and flowers. Kava, called yaqona, is prepared and shared in a welcome ceremony, in which the drink is mixed in a large wooden bowl, the tanoa, and offered to guests in coconut shells to the clap of hands. Meals are cooked in a lovo, an underground earth oven, with root vegetables, fish and pork. Celebrations include meke, a dance telling stories, and school and community programmes.
