About Gandhi Jayanti
Gandhi Jayanti commemorates the birth of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar. In Delhi, leaders gather at Raj Ghat, his memorial, for a multi-faith prayer service, with hymns such as "Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram" and "Vaishnava Jana To". Schools hold essays, quizzes and cleaning drives, and many people spin cotton on a charkha, as a symbol of self-reliance and of his khadi movement. The United Nations has declared the day the International Day of Non-Violence. In Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, and in memorial sites in South Africa, special programmes are held. Shops selling alcohol and meat are closed.
