About Gathering of Nations Powwow
The Gathering of Nations is held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the last weekend of April, and is the largest powwow in North America, drawing more than three thousand dancers and singers from hundreds of tribes in the United States and Canada. A powwow is a social gathering of Native American and First Nations peoples, with song, dance and visits, and began with the plains peoples. At the Gathering, competitions are held in many dance categories, such as fancy dance, men's traditional, grass dance, women's jingle dress and Northern and Southern styles, and in drum groups, which sit around a large drum and sing. A Grand Entry begins each session, led by veterans carrying flags and eagle staffs. The Miss Indian World contest is held. There is an Indian Traders Market with crafts and food, such as fry bread.
