About Kataklysmos

Kataklysmos, "the flood", is celebrated in Cyprus on the Monday after Orthodox Pentecost, and is linked with the biblical story of the Flood and with the earlier water festivals of the island. The main celebration is in the coastal town of Larnaca, where the festival lasts for several days with concerts, boat races, swimming contests, folk dances and stalls selling food and crafts along the Finikoudes promenade. People throw water at each other, in games of splashing, and the festival days are a way of cleansing and welcoming the summer. In churches and villages the services of Pentecost, the Descent of the Holy Spirit, are marked with fresh flowers and greenery. Families picnic by the seaside or in the mountains.
