About La Tomatina

La Tomatina is held in the town of Buñol, in the province of Valencia, on the last Wednesday of August. It began in 1945, as a food fight among local young people, and has since grown into an international event, limited by tickets to some 20,000 people. At about 11 a.m., a cannon is fired, and trucks unload tonnes of overripe tomatoes in the town's narrow streets. For an hour, participants throw them at one another, wearing goggles and old clothes. Another cannon marks the end, and firemen hose down the streets and people. It is part of a week of fiestas that includes a paella cooking contest, parades and fireworks, in honour of Saint Louis Bertrand and the Virgin of the Defenceless.
