About Mehregan
Mehregan is an ancient Iranian festival held on the day of Mehr in the month of Mehr, the sixteenth of Mehr, around 8 October. It is dedicated to Mithra, the divinity of covenant, friendship and light, and also celebrates the autumn harvest. In ancient Persia it was among the biggest festivals, with royal banquets and gifts. Today it is chiefly observed by Zoroastrians, in Yazd and Kerman in Iran and in Parsi communities, with a table of fruits, flowers, sweets, a mirror and a lit flame, family meals and prayers at the fire temple. Many Iranians have started to celebrate it again as a cultural festival, with gatherings, poetry readings and the giving of gifts. It is also known as the festival of friendship.
