About Nooruz in Kyrgyzstan

Nooruz is the Kyrgyz celebration of spring, kept on 21 March, with roots in the pre-Islamic belief in renewal. Families prepare a traditional dish of seven ingredients, called kok chai or kok-chorp, and the wheat-based drink maksym, and share them with neighbours. Fresh yurts are put up in town squares, with embroidered felt carpets, shyrdak and ala-kiyiz, and visitors are served kumys, fermented mare's milk, and other dishes. Horse games take place in the festival field, including kok boru, a team game in which riders try to carry a goat carcass to a goal, and ordo, and the wrestling of kurosh. In the evening there are concerts of folk instruments, such as the komuz, and dancing.
