About Sadeh

Jashn-e Sadeh is an old Iranian midwinter festival held on 10 Bahman, around 30 January, which celebrates the discovery of fire and the triumph of light and warmth over frost. The name means "hundred", counted by tradition as the hundred days and nights before Nowruz in the calendar of the old year. In Zoroastrian communities, particularly in Kerman, Yazd and Tehran, a large bonfire is lit at dusk, with prayers from the Avesta, songs and chants, and people dance around and bring offerings of wood. Elders tell the story of Hushang, the legendary king who discovered fire when he threw a stone at a serpent and sparked a flint. The festival is also observed in Persian cultural gatherings in other places, with dinners and music.
