About Singapore National Day
Singapore became an independent republic on 9 August 1965, and each year this is marked with the National Day Parade, at the Padang or the Marina Bay floating platform. It includes a military march-past, mobile columns, a flypast of fighter jets, and a show with thousands of performers. The national flag is raised and the National Pledge and anthem Majulah Singapura are said by all. Families display flags from their flats, residents receive a gift pack, and the Singapore Armed Forces perform the State Flag flypast with a helicopter. In the evening, fireworks light the sky above the bay. In each neighbourhood, community centres hold their own smaller parties.
