About Throne Day in Morocco

Throne Day, on 30 July, marks the accession of King Mohammed VI to the throne in 1999 and is Morocco's main national holiday. The king gives a speech to the nation, broadcast on television and radio, and pardons are given to prisoners. Streets are hung with flags and photographs of the king, and towns hold parades, fireworks, folk music and fantasia, the horseback performances in which riders in robes gallop in line and fire their muskets together. In the past a ceremony of allegiance, the bay'a, was held in which officials and governors bowed to the king, and in some years it takes place at the palace. The day is used by many families to meet, eat and spend time outdoors in the evening.
