About Tu BiShvat

Tu BiShvat, the 15th of Shevat, is the "new year of the trees" in Jewish law, the date for calculating the age of fruit trees for tithing. In late winter, the first almond blossoms appear in Israel. Today it is celebrated by planting trees, with schoolchildren in Israel and in Jewish communities abroad planting saplings, and by eating fruits especially linked with the land, such as figs, dates, grapes, pomegranates and olives, along with carob, nuts and other dried fruits. Kabbalists of 16th-century Safed introduced a seder of fruit and four cups of wine, from white to red, which is still held. The day has been taken up as a time to think about the environment and care of the earth.
