Aarti

The waving of a lit lamp before a deity, with song, to close a prayer.

Also: arti, arati

Aarti is the moment of light at the end of a Hindu puja. A priest or worshipper moves a plate or lamp holding burning camphor or ghee wicks in a circle before the image of the god, while bells ring and a hymn is sung. The congregation then passes their hands over the flame and touches them to their eyes and forehead, taking in the blessing. Aarti is performed in temples at set times of the day and on the banks of the Ganges every evening at Varanasi and Haridwar, where it draws large crowds.

Region: South Asia
