Credencial
The stamped booklet that Camino pilgrims carry to show their route.
Also: pilgrim passport
The credencial, or pilgrim passport, is a folded card or small booklet that pilgrims carry on the Camino de Santiago, stamped at hostels, churches, cafes and towns along the way. It allows the holder to stay in pilgrim hostels, called albergues, and, on arrival in Santiago, to receive the Compostela, a certificate of the pilgrimage, if they have walked at least the last 100 kilometres, or cycled 200. The stamps, sellos, are collected with pride, and each has its own design. Many walkers keep the credencial as a diary of the journey. Similar passports exist for the Shikoku pilgrimage in Japan.
