The evil eye is a belief, found from the Mediterranean to the Middle East, South Asia, Africa and Latin America, that a look of envy or admiration can cause harm to a person, a child, an animal or property. Protection includes blue glass beads with an eye, called nazar in Turkey, the hamsa hand, red threads, garlic, a black dot on a baby's cheek and the habit of saying a blessing such as mashallah after a compliment. In Latin America, it is called mal de ojo and is treated by healers with an egg or herbs.
