Feng shui
The Chinese art of arranging buildings and rooms to harmonise with energy.
Also: fengshui
Feng shui, meaning wind and water, is an old Chinese practice of choosing sites and arranging buildings, doors and furniture so that qi, the flow of life energy, moves well. Practitioners use a compass, the lay of the land and the principles of yin and yang and the five elements. A house with its back to a hill and its face to water is considered ideal. Many families consult a feng shui master before buying property, opening a business or moving a bed. It is also used in Korea, Japan and Vietnam. Opinion on its value varies, but it is a living part of everyday culture.
