Haka
The Maori posture dance with chant, stamping and fierce expressions.
Also: kapa haka
The haka is a traditional Maori dance, performed by a group with rhythmic stamping, hand slaps, chants and expressive faces, including the poking out of the tongue. It was used to prepare for war, but also to welcome guests, mark important events and honour the dead. There are many hakas, such as Ka Mate, made famous by the All Blacks rugby team, and many are now also sung at weddings and graduations, by women and men. Kapa haka is the broader performing art, in which groups compete in festivals. The haka is a statement of identity, pride and respect, and should be treated with care.
