Inti Raymi
The Inca festival of the sun, revived each 24 June at Cusco.
Also: festival of the sun
Inti Raymi, the festival of the sun, was the greatest ceremony of the Inca Empire, held at the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere, to thank the sun god Inti and ask for the return of light and good crops. Spanish rulers banned it, but it was revived in 1944 at Cusco as a re-creation, with actors playing the Sapa Inca and his court, and thousands of participants in costume, in a procession from the Qorikancha temple to the fortress of Sacsayhuaman. It is performed every 24 June, in Quechua, with offerings and dances, and draws many visitors and local families.
