Krathong
A small floating offering of leaves, flowers and candle, set on the water at Loi Krathong.
Also: loi krathong
A krathong is a small raft, traditionally made from a slice of banana trunk wrapped in folded banana leaves and decorated with flowers, a candle and incense. At Loi Krathong, on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month in Thailand, people set krathongs on rivers, ponds and canals to thank the water goddess and to let go of grudges and ill luck. Some add a coin or a lock of hair. In Chiang Mai, the festival merges with Yi Peng, when thousands of lanterns rise into the sky. Modern krathongs are made of biodegradable materials, and bread ones are popular.
