Langar
The free community kitchen of a Sikh gurdwara, open to everyone.
Also: guru ka langar
Langar is the communal meal served at every Sikh gurdwara, free of charge, to all visitors regardless of religion, caste, wealth or gender. Volunteers cook, serve and wash up, and everyone sits on the floor in rows, to eat the same simple vegetarian food of dal, roti and rice. The custom began with Guru Nanak and was made a rule by later Gurus, as a living act of equality and service. The Golden Temple in Amritsar serves tens of thousands of meals every day. Visitors cover their heads and remove their shoes before entering the hall.
