Lobola
Gifts, traditionally cattle, from the groom's family to the bride's in Southern Africa.
Also: lobolo, bridewealth, roora
Lobola is the custom of the groom's family giving the bride's family gifts, traditionally cattle and today often money, as part of the marriage in Southern Africa. It is negotiated by the two families through representatives over several meetings, and is seen as a sign of respect for the bride, thanks to her parents and the joining of two families. The talks are often formal and good-humoured. Once agreed, the wedding can proceed. Debates continue about its meaning and cost, but many families and couples continue the practice, with younger couples often adjusting the amount and form.
