A rich round pastry shared at the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Also: yuebing
A mooncake is a round pastry with a thick filling of lotus seed paste, red bean or salted egg yolk, stamped with a pattern on top. It is eaten at the Mid-Autumn Festival, when the moon is full, and given to relatives, friends and business partners in decorated boxes. The round shape stands for completeness and family reunion. Cantonese mooncakes are baked with a golden crust, Suzhou ones have flaky layers and snow skin ones are chilled. Legends say that mooncakes carried a message of revolt against the Mongols. Today there are ice cream, chocolate and custard varieties, and the gift boxes can be extravagant.
