Nyepi

The Balinese day of silence, when the whole island stays still for the new year.

A pattern drawn for this page, not a picture of Nyepi.

Also: day of silence

Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu new year, is a day of complete silence. For 24 hours no one goes outside, lights are not lit, there is no work, no travel and no entertainment, and even the airport closes. The island is dark and quiet, and the aim is to fool evil spirits into thinking Bali is empty. The day before, huge papier-mache figures called ogoh-ogoh are paraded through the streets and burned, driving away negative forces. After Nyepi, families visit each other to ask for forgiveness. The observance is respected by all residents and visitors alike.
