Omikuji

Also: fortune slip

An omikuji is a printed fortune that visitors draw at a Japanese shrine or temple by shaking a box or paying a coin. It tells a person's luck, from great blessing to great curse, and gives advice about health, love and travel. If the fortune is good, it is kept in a wallet, and if it is bad, it is tied to a pine branch or a special rack at the shrine, so the bad luck stays behind. Many are now also printed in English and other languages for visitors. The slips often include a short poem.

Region: East Asia
