Rakhi

A thread tied by a sister on her brother's wrist, with a promise of protection.

A pattern drawn for this page, not a picture of Rakhi.

Also: raksha bandhan

Rakhi is a decorative thread, bracelet or band that a sister ties on her brother's wrist on Raksha Bandhan, the full moon day of Shravan in late summer. She applies a tilak, offers sweets and prays for his well-being, and he gives her a gift and promises to look after her. The bond may be between cousins and friends as well as siblings, and women sometimes tie a rakhi on soldiers and neighbours. Sisters who live far away post the rakhi in time for the day, and shops fill with bright and sparkly designs in the weeks before.
