Tangi
The Maori funeral gathering of several days at the marae.
Also: tangihanga
The tangi, short for tangihanga, is the Maori funeral rite, lasting two to four days, during which the body lies in the meeting house of the family marae, accompanied by relatives who keep watch day and night. Mourners arrive in groups, are formally welcomed with a call and speeches, and weep and sing laments, waiata tangi, in front of the body. Greenery is worn as a wreath, and a meal is served. The deceased is spoken to directly and the stories of their life are told. The burial takes place after the final speeches. Some families also unveil a headstone a year later.
