Vision quest
A period alone in nature in fasting and prayer, seeking guidance, in many Plains traditions.
Also: hanbleceya
A vision quest is a rite practised by many Native peoples of the Plains and elsewhere, in which a person goes alone to a quiet place for several days without food or water, praying for guidance, a vision or a name. It is guided by an elder or spiritual leader, who prepares the seeker with a sweat lodge, and afterwards helps interpret what was seen. It is often done at a turning point, such as coming of age, and may be repeated. Each nation has its own form, and the experience is private. The practice is sacred and is not a tourist activity.
