About Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo marks the victory of the Mexican army over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. In Mexico it is chiefly a regional holiday in the state of Puebla, with a parade, reenactments of the battle and local cuisine, and is not the Independence Day, which is in September. In the United States, it has grown into a celebration of Mexican-American culture, with parties, music, folk dance, parades and restaurant specials. The roots of the American celebration are in the 1860s, when Mexican communities in California supported the Mexican side against French intervention. Typical foods in Puebla include mole poblano, cemitas and chalupas, and in the United States, tacos, guacamole and margaritas.
