About Crop Over
Crop Over began in the 1780s as a celebration at the end of the sugar-cane harvest on the island's plantations, with songs, dances and feasting for the enslaved workers. It faded in the 20th century, and was revived in 1974. Today it runs for about five weeks from the end of June, with calypso tents, Soca Monarch competitions, cultural markets, fetes and a Cohobblopot show with story and dance. The Last Cart of Canes is carried, symbolically, and an effigy of Mr Harding, a straw figure that stands for the hard times of the year, is ceremonially burned. The festival climaxes on Kadooment Day, the first Monday of August, when thousands of masqueraders in glittering costumes parade and dance along the route to the National Stadium. Flying fish and cou-cou are eaten.
