About Guru Nanak Gurpurab
Guru Nanak Gurpurab celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak, the first of the ten Sikh gurus, on the full moon of Kartik. Two days before, gurdwaras begin an uninterrupted reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Akhand Path, which ends on the morning of the birthday. A procession led by the five beloved ones carries the scripture through town. Kirtan, hymn singing, continues into the early hours and langar is served to everyone who comes. Pilgrims travel from India to Nankana Sahib in Pakistan, where the Guru was born. Homes are lit with lamps and candles, and many people wear new clothes to the gurdwara.
