When is Makar Sankranti in 2027?

Makar Sankranti 2027 is on Thursday, 14 January 2027. Other years: 2028, Saturday, 15 January 2028.

About Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti marks the sun's move into Capricorn and the start of its northward journey, which is considered auspicious. It is one of the few Hindu festivals set by the solar calendar, so it falls on almost the same date each year. People bathe in rivers, especially at Prayagraj, Haridwar and Ganga Sagar, and give grain and sesame to the poor. In Gujarat the sky fills with kites at the Uttarayan festival. In Maharashtra friends exchange sesame and jaggery sweets with the words "til gul ghya, god god bola". In the south it merges with Pongal and in Assam with Magh Bihu. In Punjab the evening before is Lohri.
