About Pakistan Day
Pakistan Day, on 23 March, remembers the Lahore Resolution of 1940, in which the All-India Muslim League called for a separate homeland, and also the proclamation of the country as an Islamic Republic in 1956. The day begins with a 31-gun salute in the capital and a 21-gun salute in provincial capitals. A parade by the armed forces and a display of floats from each province are held in Islamabad, in recent years combined with a flypast. Schools and offices fly the green and white flag, and Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore, the tower built at the site of the resolution, is a gathering point. Public buildings are lit and families take part in local programmes.
