About Pakistan Independence Day
Pakistan became independent on 14 August 1947, and the day is celebrated with the national flag, which is flown from rooftops, vehicles and market stalls. Many people dress in green and white, children carry painted flags and badges, and cities hold concerts and flag-raising ceremonies. At midnight, there is a tradition of fireworks, car horns and national songs. In Islamabad the president and prime minister attend the flag-hoisting ceremony. At the Wagah border near Lahore, the daily lowering of the flags with its precise, high-stepping parade has an especially large crowd on this day. Roads and public buildings are decorated with lights.
