About Purim
Purim, on the 14th of Adar, recalls the rescue of the Jews of Persia from the plot of the minister Haman, as told in the Book of Esther. The Megillah, the scroll of the book, is read aloud in the synagogue, evening and morning, and listeners make noise with graggers, rattles, whenever Haman's name is read. People wear costumes and masks, and children and adults hold carnival parties, the largest being Adloyada parades in Israeli towns. Four customs are observed: hearing the Megillah, giving mishloach manot, gifts of food to friends, giving charity to the poor, and a festive meal, the seudah. The treat of the day is hamantaschen, three-cornered filled pastries, traditionally filled with poppy seed or fruit.
