About Rama Navami

Rama Navami celebrates the birth of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, on the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra. Temples hold readings from the Ramayana and the Ramcharitmanas, and at noon, the hour believed to be his birth, an image of the infant Rama is placed in a cradle and rocked. Many devotees keep a fast. In Ayodhya pilgrims bathe in the Sarayu river and visit temples, and in Bhadrachalam in Telangana the wedding of Sita and Rama is re-enacted in front of a vast gathering. In Maharashtra and Gujarat, a drink of jaggery and pepper called panakam is shared with neighbours, and the ritual of Kalyanotsavam is performed.
