About Saudi National Day
Saudi National Day, on 23 September, celebrates the day in 1932 when King Abdulaziz declared the unification of the Kingdom of Najd and Hejaz as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The streets, buildings and cars are decorated in green and white, with the flag and a sword in the national emblem. Concerts, folk dances such as the ardah, a sword dance performed by lines of men to the beat of drums, and air displays in the main cities draw crowds. Families visit parks and corniches, wear traditional clothing, and watch fireworks in the evening. Shops give out sweets and gifts. In recent years the day has become a large public celebration with entertainment events, and schools hold their own programmes.
