About Þorrablót

Þorrablót is a midwinter feast held in Iceland in the month of Þorri, which starts on the Friday between 19 and 25 January and lasts about four weeks. It takes its name from Þorri, a personification of winter in old Norse tradition, and was revived in the 1950s. Communities, clubs and families hold gatherings at which they eat þorramatur, traditional foods preserved by older methods, in a wooden trough: hákarl, fermented shark, hrútspungar, ram's testicles, svið, singed sheep's head, sour blood pudding, smoked lamb, rye bread, and dried fish with butter. Brennivín, a caraway-flavoured spirit, is drunk. There are speeches, singing and dancing. Many foreign guests are invited to try the dishes. The foods were once a way of preserving food through the winter.
