About Tsukimi

Tsukimi, "moon viewing", is the Japanese celebration of the harvest moon, on the fifteenth night of the eighth month of the old calendar, in September or October. People set out on a veranda or at a window a stand of white dumplings, tsukimi dango, stacked in a pyramid, along with taro, chestnuts, and pampas grass, susuki, in a vase, as an offering of thanks. They sit quietly with tea or sake to admire the moon. In Japanese folklore, the figure of a rabbit pounding rice cakes can be seen on the face of the moon. Burger chains and shops in the modern day sell moon-themed egg dishes, tsukimi, such as eggs on noodles. A second moon viewing a month later is called jusanya.
