About Republic Day of Turkey

Cumhuriyet Bayrami, on 29 October, marks the declaration of the Republic of Turkey in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Streets, windows and balconies are hung with the red and white flag, and portraits of Atatürk are everywhere. In Ankara, official ceremonies, including wreath-laying at Anıtkabir, his mausoleum, take place, and the president receives guests at the palace. Schools put on programmes of songs, poems and plays, and cities hold parades, concerts and torchlight marches in the evening. The day is also celebrated by Turks living abroad, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The holiday begins at lunchtime on 28 October. Fireworks are often set off over the Bosphorus in Istanbul.
