About Ugadi and Gudi Padwa

Ugadi in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, both begin the Hindu lunar year on the first day of the month of Chaitra. Homes are cleaned, doorways are hung with mango leaves and rangoli is drawn. In Maharashtra a gudi, a bright silk cloth with a garland, neem leaves and an upturned silver pot, is raised outside the house as a sign of victory and good luck. In the Telugu and Kannada lands the day is begun with Ugadi pachadi, which blends neem flower, raw mango, jaggery, tamarind and chilli to taste the six flavours of life. The almanac for the coming year is read aloud.
