About Vishu
Vishu is the Malayali new year in the month of Medam. The night before, a Vishukkani is arranged: a mirror, gold, rice, fruit, flowers, a lit lamp and a golden konna blossom. Family members are woken and led with eyes closed to see it first, in the belief that the first sight shapes the year. Elders then give small coins, the Vishukkaineettam, to children. The day continues with new clothes, firecrackers and a vegetarian feast, and temples such as Guruvayur and Sabarimala are crowded from dawn. A special dish combines bitter, sweet, sour and salty tastes, a reminder that life holds all of them.
