Ao dai
The long, slim, side-slit tunic worn over trousers by Vietnamese women.
Also: ao dai dress
The ao dai is the national dress of Vietnam, a long fitted tunic split at the sides and worn over loose trousers. It is made of silk or other fine cloth, and worn for weddings, Tet, school uniforms and formal occasions. White is the schoolgirl colour, red or gold the bridal one. The modern cut emerged in the 1930s, from a looser court garment. Men wear a version called ao gam at weddings. The ao dai has been admired and adapted by designers, and many Vietnamese families hold a tailor in high regard for fitting one to the body.
