Li xi
Red envelopes of lucky money given at the Vietnamese new year.
Also: lucky money, li xi envelope
Li xi are small red envelopes containing money that adults give to children and elders at Tet, the Vietnamese new year, along with a wish for health and luck. The money is new notes, and the amount is less important than the gesture. Employers also give envelopes to staff. The first person to enter the house in the new year is chosen carefully, as the first visitor is thought to set the tone for the year. The red colour stands for good fortune, and the practice parallels the Chinese hongbao. Children dress up and greet relatives, waiting for the envelope.
