Ceilidh
A Scottish and Irish social evening of folk dancing and music.
Also: cèilidh
A ceilidh, pronounced kay-lee, is a social gathering with Gaelic roots, now best known as an evening of folk dance and live music in Scotland and Ireland. A caller announces each dance, such as the Dashing White Sergeant or the Gay Gordons, and everyone joins in, from children to grandparents, with no experience needed. A band of fiddle, accordion and drum plays reels, jigs and strathspeys. The word originally meant a visit, and referred to storytelling and songs in a neighbour's house. Ceilidhs are held at weddings, village halls and Burns Night suppers, and are among the liveliest of British customs.
