Kilt
The pleated knee-length wrap of Scotland, made in the pattern of a clan tartan.
Also: tartan
The kilt is a knee-length garment of pleated woollen cloth, wrapped around the waist and fastened with a belt, worn by Scottish men at weddings, ceilidhs and sporting events. Its checked pattern, the tartan, identifies a clan or district, with the colours originally from local plants and dyes. The kilt is worn with a sporran, a pouch, a jacket, long socks and a skean dhu, a small knife. The garment evolved from the belted plaid of the Highlands, and it was banned for a time after 1746. Today it is a symbol of Scottish identity, and is also worn in Ireland, Brittany and Wales as a Celtic emblem.
