Compadrazgo

The bond of godparenthood, linking two families, in Latin America.

Also: padrinos, compadre

Compadrazgo is a system of ritual kinship in Latin America in which godparents, padrinos, are chosen for a child's baptism, confirmation, first communion or wedding, and become co-parents, compadres and comadres, with the child's parents. The bond creates obligations of help, advice and friendship between families, and chosen godparents are often of higher standing or are close friends. Godparents pay for parts of ceremonies and gifts, such as the dress of a quinceanera, and stand ready to support the child in life. The custom came from Catholic Spain and joined older Indigenous ideas of reciprocity. It remains a central social institution.

Region: Latin America and the Caribbean
