Quinceañera
The celebration of a girl's fifteenth birthday in Latin America and the United States.
Also: quince, fiesta de quince
The quinceanera is a coming-of-age celebration for a girl at the age of fifteen, held in Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Latino communities in the United States. It often begins with a Mass of thanksgiving, in which the girl wears a ballgown and carries a bouquet, and continues with a party. She dances a waltz with her father and a court of fourteen couples, changes from flat shoes to heels and receives a tiara, a doll and a gift of jewellery. Godparents contribute to the costs.
