Darshan

The act of seeing a deity, a holy person or a sacred image, and being seen.

A pattern drawn for this page, not a picture of Darshan.

Also: darsana

Darshan means sight, and in Hindu practice it refers to the act of seeing a deity or a revered teacher, with the belief that the gaze is an exchange of blessing. Worshippers stand before the image in the temple, eyes open, and the deity is dressed, adorned and curtained at set times so that devotees can have darshan. The same word is used for visiting a guru or a saint, and for the viewing of a famous site. At pilgrimage places such as Tirupati, queues for darshan may last hours. The idea is that a person receives grace by looking and being seen with devotion.
