Dirndl
The Alpine dress of Bavaria and Austria, worn at festivals and Oktoberfest.
Also: tracht, lederhosen
The dirndl is a traditional dress of Bavaria, Austria and South Tyrol, made up of a fitted bodice, a full skirt, a blouse and an apron. The bow of the apron, tied on the left, right or at the back, is said to show whether a woman is single, married or widowed. The male counterpart is lederhosen, leather breeches with embroidered braces, worn with a checked shirt and a felt hat. Both are called Tracht, the regional costume. They are worn at Oktoberfest, weddings, church festivals and local celebrations, and many families keep a good set for generations. Fashion has revived the style.
